Locally raised high quality Flemish Giants,Standard Rex and hybrids for meat, show or pets!
Rabbit meat is a very healthy and nutritious alternative to beef and pork. Rabbit is significantly lower in calories, fat, saturated fat and sodium than other red meats. It is a great option for people on low cholesterol, low fat, or low calorie diets and those who are just trying to eat healthier in general or lose a little weight. Plus its local!
Rabbits can be roasted whole, similar to a chicken. Or use ground to replace any ground beef in your favorite recipe!
We are more "homestead," than "show." However, we do produce Flemish and Rex that are well worth putting on the show table. We often have Flemish Giants in almost all the ARBA breed standard accepted colors: Black, White, Light Gray, Steel Gray, Sandy and Fawn. We have Standard Rex in many colors!
Rabbits are an efficient, inexpensive and easy way to raise your own meat. They are low maintenance, quiet, and require far less space and feed than cows or pigs. For example, the same amount of food and water required to produce one pound of beef, will produce 6 pounds of rabbit meat. Rabbits are a great option for just about everybody! Even most cities allow a certain number of rabbits. They are a great addition to your homestead or backyard. Our rabbits are environmentally friendly, and locally raised, you can't beat that! Rabbit manure makes a great fertilizer that can be applied directly, no need to compost first. Your plants will love it!
We tried raising rabbits in standard wire cages, and they were miserable. I didn't like it, they didn't like it. We knew there had to be a better way to raise rabbits, and there is! We raise our rabbits in a modified colony environment. We aim for between 20 and 25 Sq feet per adult rabbit in the colony. Compare that to 7.5 sq feet with a 30" x 36" wire cage (and some cages are only 30" x 30" or 6.25 sq ft). The bucks are in individual runs, so the does are bred when scheduled. Everybody is happy! When the babies start to leave the nest to explore, they can be found snuggling with the other adult rabbits, without harm. Rabbits are very social, and this systems has been working for us quite well. They are not raised in cramped cages, all alone. They have room to move around and are often seen grooming each other. We have a strict hygiene routine in order to keep our rabbits healthy, happy and free of parasites and diseases. The recommendation for using wire cages came from commercial systems. Chickens in commercial systems are raised in individual wire cages as well, yet no backyard chicken raiser would put their hens in cages like that! Well I've taken that same mind frame and applied it to my rabbits. We raise cage free rabbits here! (When buying eggs, wouldn't you rather buy cage free eggs?) If chickens deserve better, why don't rabbits too?
We offer free-choice feed, meaning they have access to pellets around the clock. They also have unlimited access to grass hay and are given healthy treats like cuttings from the apple trees. With ample opportunity to exercise in the colony, none of the rabbits have ever gotten overweight, which is very unhealthy for rabbits. Weather permitting, we also add daily fodder. The rabbits love it and it's a great way to cut down on the cost of feed while providing an excellent and healthy source of food. During the winter we take a break from feeding fodder, as our system is outside and doesn't produce as well in cold temperatures.
The main location is in beautiful Mendocino County in Northern California, second location in now in Tehama County! We often travel to other areas throughout Northern California. Therefore, sometimes delivery is possible, just ask!
